The Dark Side of LED Stage Lighting
As more and more venues seem to be moving to the lower wattage LED stage lights the little known problem of refresh rates rears it’s ugly head. As the LED lights in the panels refresh themselves you are sometimes left with strange things happening to your photos when you shoot below 1/250.
I am currently trying to research more into it, but I believe that the refresh rate in Australia is 240hz (240 times a second). This is far too fast for the human eye to see, but it then falls right into the firing line for the camera.
This shot below is in fact to the naked eye, lit completely with a purple wash. However as I was shooting at 1/640 I ran into the problem which as you will see, has made part of the image affected by the refresh rate completely black.
